Welcome to Cycle Vita Low PRO, a community for anyone and everyone on a low-protein diet, or caring for someone who is.

Following a low-protein diet, or caring for someone who is, isn’t easy, especially when you’re also juggling work, family, and day-to-day responsibilities.

There are lots of different reasons you, or someone you love, may be following a low-protein diet, including people living with:

  • Phenylketonuria (PKU)
  • Tyrosinemia (Types 1-3)
  • Urea cycle disorders (UCDs)
  • Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD)
  • Alkaptonuria (AKU)
  • Organic acidemias
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Cystinuria
  • Homocystinuria (HCU)

Why can protein be a problem?

Protein is an important nutrient to help us grow, repair muscles, and stay strong.

When someone eats protein, enzymes within the body will break that protein down into the amino acids it contains. As part of the metabolism of proteins, the body can produce toxic waste byproducts, which need to be excreted by the body.

Typically, people with metabolic disorders can’t break down, process, or convert all the amino acids in the way we would expect. The toxic byproducts can then accumulate in the body. This can cause serious complications and can be life-threatening.

For people with kidney or liver diseases, eating too much protein can overwork the damaged kidney filters and their bodies can’t excrete the toxic byproducts of protein. This can also cause serious complications and can be life-threatening

Everyone on a low-protein diet has a different level of tolerance of protein. Some people may just need a controlled intake, some may need to avoid it completely and formulas are used across these disorders to ensure that patients get enough essential amino acids if they can't get them from protein.
